Outstanding Two-Gallon Stoneware Epitaph Crock with Cobalt Stars Decoration, Inscribed "HOLD YOUR TONGUE", Stamped "BROWN BROTHER. / HUNTINGTON, L.I.," circa 1870-1885, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with the folksy slip-trailed cobalt inscription, "HOLD YOUR TONGUE", surrounded by three stars. Relatively few star-decorated examples of Brown Brothers stoneware are known. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor at a Huntington area auction in the 1970s. A 1 1/4" chip to left side of rim on crock's front. A shallower 1" chip to right side of rim on front. A 1" chip on interior of rim. A small handle chip. A short hairline from rim on left side of jar above handle.
