Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Bold Cobalt Clover Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1850, large-sized, ovoid pitcher with flared collar, heavily-tooled rim, and applied handle, the front profusely-decorated with a thickly-applied clover plant design. Collar decorated with cobalt swags. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed "3" on collar. American stoneware pitchers of this size are considered scarce. This example is the finest Baltimore clover-decorated pitcher of this size we have seen, featuring excellent cobalt brushwork with an enamel-like thickness to the slip. Very nice condition with two base chips, a few short, minor lines at base, a small, glazed-over stone ping to right of decoration, and two small spout chips. H 14 3/4".
