Extremely Rare and Important One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Incised Flowering Plant Decoration, Stamped "T. WARNE. Co / S. AMBOY", New Jersey origin, circa 1797-1805, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout and applied handle, decorated with an artistic, deeply-incised design of a large flowering plant. Blossom features alternating rounded and pointed petals with incised details throughout. Impressed with the maker's mark of Thomas Warne, "T. WARNE Co.", above the flower, and "SOUTH AMBOY" below. Examples bearing this mark were used before Warne's involvement with his son-in-law, Joshua Letts, and are considerably rarer than products made during this partnership. In general, South Amboy stoneware pieces are quite rare with freehand incising, as most examples were decorated with simplistic stamped or rouletted designs. This jug is only the second incised example of stoneware from this pottery we have had the privilege of offering. Its nicely-developed floral motif is coupled by an appealing one-gallon size to the jug. Very nice overall condition. Some shallow chips to base. Otherwise as-made condition with firing flaws, including a stone ping to handle, an in-the-firing contact mark/chip to top of handle and top of spout, a star-shaped line to shoulder on jug's right side, and various small pings to surface. H 11 3/4".
