Exceptional Redware Pedestal-Based Urn with Applied Flowering Urn Motifs and Grape-Cluster Handles, Stamped Twice "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO" and Once "JOHN BELL", Inscribed "V.C. Bell / 1874", Pennsylvania origin, 1874, skillfully-potted form with tooled pedestal base, ovoid body, and flared rim, decorated on the front and reverse with a molded and applied design of an urn brimming with flowers and grapes, surrounded by an acanthus leaf border. Large handles molded in the form of grape clusters. Impressed at shoulder "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'" and additionally on underside with "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'" and "JOHN BELL" maker's marks. Underside with incised signature of John Bell's son, "V.C. Bell / 1874". Victor Conrad Bell (1844-1925) primarily served as a decorator at his father's shop due to a childhood injury. A small number of well-decorated stoneware and redware objects bears his incised incised signature along with his father's impressed mark. This example of unusual size and form is a refined and highly sculptural example. A large area of shallow chipping and exfoliation to rim. Otherwise excellent, essentially as-made condition. Some white paint residue indicates this urn was painted at one time. H 9 1/2" ; Diameter (across top of urn) 9 3/8".
