Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG. PA", circa 1865, squat-shaped, cylindrical cooler with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, the base with applied circular bunghole. Front decorated with a brushed sweeping stem bearing four flower blossoms. Bunghole with heavy spotted cobalt decoration. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. An exceptional and striking form, highly unusual for this desirable Central Pennsylvania potting firm. Excellent condition with a very tight horizontal line at base and a minor chip to back end of handle. H 12 1/2".
