Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "F. STETZENMEYER / ROCHESTER, N.Y.", circa 1855, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout and applied handle, decorated with an artistic slip-trailed floral design featuring a large tulip blossom with striped center and heavily-shaded petals and leaves. Slip-trailed "3" below spout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Frederick Stetzenmeyer remains one of the most admired and collectible of all New York State stoneware makers. This example survives in rarely-found, "like-new" condition and features crisp decoration and striking color. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with an in-the-firing contact mark to top of handle.
