Outstanding Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised and Impressed Floral Decorations, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK," early 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, narrow mouth, and open loop handles, featuring the large impressed maker's mark of Clarkson Crolius, Sr. on its front, underscored by an impressed flower blossom. Reverse decorated with a finely-incised design of a flower with scalloped leaves and impressed blossom forming its center. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, impressed decoration, incised decoration, and handle terminals. This jar, which employs both impressed and freehand-incised floral motifs, is one of the finest signed Crolius examples of the form we have offered. The decoration on the reverse features the most artistic incised design on a Crolius jar we have offered to date. Rim chips, a minor base chip, and an in-the-firing iron ping near base on side of jar. Otherwise excellent condition. H 12".
