Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Profuse Cobalt Fuchsia and Stenciled Star Decorations, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES / GREENSBORO, PA," circa 1870, ovoid jug with tooled spout and ribbed handle, decorated with a large undulating fuchsia vine design above the large stenciled maker's mark of Frank Hamilton & John Jones. Decorated below with a row of crisply-stenciled stars flanked by graduated freehand stripes. Base with large stenciled "2" flanked by stylized foliate stenciling and underscored by a freehand stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. With a combination of freehand and stenciled motifs that cover nearly the entire front of the vessel, this example is one of the finest Hamilton & Jones jugs we have ever offered. Excellent condition with a shallow chip to handle.
