Fine and Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Walking Bird Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG. PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with flared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with an unusual brushed design of a walking bird atop a shrubbed knoll. Spotted highlights to wing and tail. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Relatively few Cowden & Wilcox bird designs show a sense of motion as this decoration does. The shrubs to the bird's left are also unusual touches. Minor rim chips. Wear to inner rim where lid would rest. Faint 5" line on underside. Smooth chip to end of one handle and a minor 3/4" horizontal line in same handle.
