Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Vine Decoration and Elaborate Coggled Foliate Design, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, third quarter 19th century, with cylindrical body and tall flaring collar with heavily-tooled rim, the midsection decorated with a coggled design of alternating fan-shaped and circular blossoms emanating from leafy stems. Body of pitcher features a brushed cobalt vines with looping stems. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent straight-sided form with well-detailed coggling. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a forty-year Southern U.S. collection. Professionally-restored handle, and a few very minor chips on interior of rim, which appear to be in-the-firing. Otherwise excellent condition. H 9 3/8".
