Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1850, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a boldly slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, perched on a stump surrounded by shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent detail to bird's body, including heavy feathering to neck and breast. An exceptionally well-colored example and one of the finest Norton single pheasants we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in North Carolina. Approximately 10" tight diagonal line extending from base on left side of jug, not visible from front. This line includes some short lines, which extend off from it. Two additional short lines to front. An additional short line to front base, and a very faint 1 1/4" surface line to front. Some short lines in spout, probably in-the-firing. Some minor handle wear.
