Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with finely slip-trailed design of a large pheasant with turned head and heavily-feathered body, perched on a stump surrounded by shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's and capacity marks. A particularly fine example in all respects, surviving in remarkable condition and exhibiting excellent color. Described when sold to the consignor several years ago as the "best ever" of its kind. In rarely-found, near-mint condition with some minor nicks to bottom edge and a very minor contact mark to left side of jug.
