Very Rare Sgraffito-Decorated Redware Mug, Southeastern PA origin, circa 1825, cylindrical mug with stepped, footed base and ribbed strap handle, decorated with three large and well-detailed flower blossom incised into whitish slip. Blossoms decorated with brushed green copper highlights and light brown highlights, applied with manganese or iron. Additional light brown striping to handle. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Outstanding decoration. The distinctive floral motif of a daisy featuring round and pointed petals can also be found on early incised stoneware of the Northeastern U.S. Few Pennsylvania sgraffito-decorated mugs have survived. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from an eighty-year private collection. Purchased in 1948 for $12. Base chips. Wear to handle. Thin 2" crack from rim. Chips and wear to rim, including a 1 1/4" flake above handle on reverse. H 4".
