Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Decoration of a Lady in Fine Dress, attributed to M. Perine and Sons, Baltimore, MD, circa 1850, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated with a large folk art design of a lady in striped dress, her hair styled with wavy tendrils on each side. Reverse with abstract decoration of a bearded man's face. Front and back of jar with brushed swags and flowering vines bearing fan-shaped blossoms. This important, recently-discovered jar is one of less than ten examples of human figural decoration on Baltimore stoneware known. Measuring 10" tall, the size and grandeur of the woman design is visually-striking and most impressive. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market, recently found in a Harford County, MD home. Excellent condition with a 2 3/4" tight, forked-shaped hairline on one floral-decorated side of jar, a tiny base chip, and two in-the-firing separations on underside.
