Auction Highlight: October 30, 2004 Auction | Baltimore Stoneware
Important Thirty-Five Gallon Stoneware Jar with Open Handles and Cobalt Tulip Decoration, David Parr, Sr., Baltimore, circa 1830, incredibly large, ovoid stoneware jar with squared collar, and vertical, open handles at the sides. Decorated on both sides with three large flowering plants in cobalt, as well as large blue circles around the handle terminals. Actual size of the jar is unknown, though it is considerably larger than twenty gallon vessels; the capacity measures somewhere between thirty and forty-five gallons. This is probably one of the largest stoneware vessels ever produced. A seam line is visible around the center of the jar, indicating it was wheel-thrown in two pieces, then connected. Very good condition with handles replaced and 6" line from rim. Height 28 3/4".
