Rare and Important Alexandria, VA, Two-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," circa 1850, narrow, straight-sided form with tab handles and flaring rim with tooled moldings. Decorated on the front with a two-stemmed flowering plant, and on the reverse with three horizontal flower heads around the shoulder. Rim decorated all around with several groups of cobalt swags. Impressed with Milburn"s maker"s mark below one handle, along with a two-gallon capacity mark. Unusually small size for a churn. Only the second intact churn produced by Milburn known. Excellent condition with one base chip and a faint 5 1/2" line on underside, which continues up side 3". Height 12 1/4".
