Rare, Lavishly Decorated Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar, Stamped "R. BUTT / W. City. D C," circa 1835, ovoid form with semi-squared collar and tab handles, extravagantly decorated in cobalt blue on front and back. Front of jar decorated with a large plant bearing three large flowers, with additional brushwork, perhaps mimicking a flower"s stamen, extending from the tips of the flowers on the left and right. The reverse decorated with a very large two-stemmed plant, with numerous leaves and two large flower heads. Handle ends also accented with cobalt, and shoulder embellished with three incised lines. The decoration on this jar is executed in brilliant cobalt blue against a light gray background. Two cracks on underside, which continue around base, and extend up side of jar in four places, and measuring 5", 51/2", 6", and 7". Minor base chips and one rim chip. Height 14 1/2".
