Rare Half-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Incised "Gray Clay Wash Crock(?)," Northeastern U.S. origin, circa 1825, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and ribbed lug handles, featuring the lightly-incised script inscription, "Gray Clay Wash Crock(?)," at the shoulder, brushed over with a cobalt stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Albany-slip-glazed interior, some of which is streaked across the jar's exterior surface. The incised inscription at the shoulder likely refers to the fact that this jar was a test piece that was dipped in a gray clay slip prior to firing. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Very nice condition with two rim chips. H 7 3/8".
