Fine Stoneware Bellarmine Jug, probably Frechen, Germany, 16th or 17th century, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated on the neck with a raised bearded mask above three raised coats-of-arms depicting lions and geometric motifs below a crown. Surface covered in a streaky, reddish-brown iron-oxide wash. Particularly fine molding to the face and medallions. Provenance: Consigned from the Netherlands. Professional restoration to section of front of spout, not touching the mask. A few shallow base chips. A 3/8" in-the-firing chip to body on reverse. H 7 1/2".
