Unique and Important Wooden Alderman's Staff with Painted Surface, Inscribed "C. CROLIUS / Ald. 17th. Ward.," second quarter 19th century, with bell-shaped turnings at each end and four raised bands throughout, the varnished surface with dark brown stain featuring the bold yellow inscription "C. CROLIUS. / Ald. 17th. Ward.". Cloth band at midsection. This staff was made for and used by Clarkson Crolius, Jr., while serving as Alderman of Manhattan's 17th ward. A historically-significant pottery-related object from one of America's founding families of stoneware production. Some wear to stain and varnish on reverse, not affecting inscribed side. Tack holes at midsection suggest the staff is missing one cloth band. L 22 1/2".
