One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "SMITH & DAY / NORWALK", CT origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a graduated foliate brushwork below the maker's mark. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. A tight spider crack to left side / front of jar, extending from base to midsection. A 3 1/2" surface line to right side of jar's front, not visible on interior. A faint 3" X-shaped surface line at base on reverse, not visible on interior. A shallow in-the-firing base chip. A minor base chip on reverse.
