Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Stamped "WM PECKER", Merrimacport, MA, early 19th century, ovoid jug with squared spout, decorated with cobalt highlights to the maker's mark, capacity mark, and lower handle terminal. One of a small number of signed examples of stoneware known by William Pecker, a potter famous for his redware pieces. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. An in-the-firing contact mark to top of handle. An in-the-firing chip to handle near base. An in-the-firing contact mark to front and side of jug. A curving 4 1/4" surface crack to front near base. A 1 1/4" C-shaped surface crack to front. A 2 1/2" flake to underside at edge. Some traces of brown residue from use at shoulder.
