Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Spotted Cobalt Decoration, attributed to Abraham Mead, Greenwich, CT, circa 1790, ovoid jar with footed base, flared rim, and applied loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with triangular slip-trailed designs composed of graduated spots. Slip-trailed highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Mead attribution corroborated by Killingworth, CT dealer, Lewis Scranton, who acquired related examples directly from the Mead family. Heavy chipping to base. One rim chip. In-the-firing iron pings to surface, including a large, glazed-over iron ping near base.
