Rare Pair of Painted Three-Piece Stoneware Urns with Ulysses S. Grant Profiles, probably Ohio origin, circa 1865-1890, each molded in three separate pieces, consisting of a paneled base with relief President Grant bust and grape motifs, fluted middle section, and flared urn top with relief grape vine motifs to body and acanthus-leaf-decorated rim. Both composed of dense, buff-to-gray clay in the vein of sewer tile, with old, white-painted surface. Provenance: Found in Ohio. One urn with a large reglued area to middle section, a 2" chip to interior of rim, and smaller chip with old cement fill to interior of rim. Other urn with a 1 3/4" chip to opening where top section fits into middle section. Otherwise very good condition with some expected smaller chips. H (of each) 37".
