Rare Three-Gallon Nashville, TN Stoneware Advertising Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "E. FOWLER / BEAVER PA", circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with tooling to midsection and shoulder, thick semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a sweeping fuchsia design above the stenciled advertising, "FROM / SPIRE & DUFF / NASHVILLE, TENN.", with five stenciled stars at center. Shoulder with straight freehand stripe and base with wavy freehand stripe. Impressed with Enoch Fowler maker's mark on reverse. Surface wear to midsection, shoulder, rim, and handles. A tight 1 3/4" crack on left side of jar at base, continuing across underside, where it forms a tight 4 1/2" spider crack. Shallow chips to inner rim for lid. A shallow, 1 1/4" in-the-firing base chip on reverse, which is glazed over.
