Very Rare One-Gallon Wheeling, WV Stoneware Advertising Pitcher, Western PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid pitcher with tall, flaring collar and tooled rim, the body featuring the elaborate stenciled cobalt advertising, "CONNER & SNEDEKER. / STAPLE & FANCY / GROCERIES. / MARKET & FOURTEENTH / STREETS. / WHEELING, W. VA.". Pitcher is freehand-decorated with vining above the stenciling, stripes at the rim, bottom of collar, and base of pitcher, and vertical swags along the collar and spout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A highly unusual form in Western PA advertising stoneware. Provenance: Collection of Harry Meyer, McDonald, PA. Essentially as-made condition. An in-the-firing separation to left side of lower handle terminal. Handle is still very stable. Some surface crazing to underside and base, possibly in-the-firing. A 1 3/4" line at base on reverse.
