Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Hollow Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid jug with tapered spout, decorated with a boldly-brushed design of a cluster of grapes hanging from a leafy vine, surrounded by looping tendrils. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Excellent color with unusual hollow-centered grapes featuring shaded accents to the left side of each fruit. Very nice condition with an approximately 3/4" in-the-firing, glazed-over iron ping near base on right side of jug, as well as a small, inverted U-shaped surface line to spout.
