Extremely Rare Pair of Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Figural Bottles, NJ or NY State origin, second quarter 19th century, each slip-cast in the form of an English toby with tricorn hat forming the spout, decorated with cobalt accents to the eyes, bowtie, shirt and coat buttons, pockets, and shoes, applied under a clear salt glaze. The first examples of this form that we have seen. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market pair, which recently surfaced in the Midwestern U.S. One in excellent condition. The other with a small salt drip to hat, with a few small surface chips below, as well as a spout chip on reverse. H 7 3/4".
