Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Coggled and Impressed Floral Decoration, attributed to Xerxes Price, Sayreville, NJ, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base and thick, semi-lunate handles, the shoulder embellished with a coggled vertical column motif. Jar is further-decorated on the front and reverse with a large impressed medallion featuring a tulip, surrounded by a stylized rope border. Iron-oxide highlights to impressed floral motifs and tops of handles. Among the finer attributed Price jars we have ever offered. The tulip medallion on this jar is highly unusual. A second example featuring this design resides in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Chips to one handle. Shallow chipping to opposite handle. An in-the-firing iron ping to top of rim and interior shoulder area. A small in-the-firing ping to shoulder of jar.
