Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Alexandria, VA Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "E.J. MILLER & SON. / DEALERS IN / CHINA AND / GLASS WARE / ALEXANDRIA. VA.". Freehand stripes to shoulder and base. Base with large freehand "3" flanked by flourishes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Some wear to surface and cobalt. Some whitish residue (paint) to surface, primarily on reverse shoulder area. A small surface chip to base on front, probably in-the-firing. Staining to surface.
