Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed to William Nichols, Poughkeepsie, NY, circa 1823, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a distinctive brushed foliate design featuring splayed leaves. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Unusual small size. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Very nice condition. A 1 1/4" glazed-over iron ping to one handle, as well as two faint lines to same handle, all probably in-the-firing. A few very faint, minor lines in opposite handle, all probably in-the-firing. A shallow 1 1/8" base flake. A minor iron ping to surface. Some light bubbling to heavier areas of cobalt.
