Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Cherries Decoration, Stamped "F.H. COWDEN / HARRISBURG", PA origin circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with a brushed design of a cluster of cherries and a flower emanating from a leafy branch. Cobalt highlights to capacity mark and handle terminals. An unusual design for this maker, which typically produced stoneware with stenciled motifs. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced collection of Cowden & Wilcox stoneware. Excellent condition with a base chip and a small in-the-firing iron ping, both on reverse.
