Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double-Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed, crested birds, perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A desirable Norton motif. Significant restoration to surface of crock to left of decoration, extending onto side of jar and including handle. Exfoliation to surface, primarily along base on reverse, underside, and side, as well as midsection to base on opposite side of crock. A long thin crack on underside. Two chips to interior of rim. A rough-textured salt drip to exterior edge of rim.
