Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Angel Decoration, Stamped "W.A. MACQUOID & CO / POTTERY WORKS / LITTLE 12TH ST / NEW YORK", Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed folk art design of a robed angel with curly hair and spread wings, his hands pressed together in prayer. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. While a common problem with Macquoid stoneware is the faintness of the applied cobalt slip, this example features some of the strongest cobalt that we have seen on a piece from this artistic and imaginative Manhattan shop. This crock is among the finest examples of Macquoid stoneware that we have ever offered. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced NC collection, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A 2 3/4" x 1 1/4" flake to underside at edge. A very shallow flake to underside at edge, measuring 1 5/8" x 1 1/4". An approximately 7" hairline descending from shoulder on reverse. Otherwise excellent condition with minor flaws, including a very 3" Y-shaped line near base on reverse, a small chip to interior of rim, and a faint 3/4" line to one handle terminal. H 11".
