Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA", Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1850, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flowering plant bearing five blossoms and numerous leaves. Reverse with strong decoration of four slip-trailed tulips above two wavy lines. Excellent decoration and color. Provenance: From a Virginia estate. An in-the-firing recessed area near base on side of jar. A hairline extending from rim to midsection on right side of jar's front, with an additional short, minor hairline extending through it at the rim. A tight, sealed crack extending across underside, which branches at each end, forming several short, thin cracks at base. A small, glazed-over base chip and two minor, post-firing base chips.
