Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.", Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and squared rim, decorated with three large, brushed tulips with graduated leaves, extending around the circumference of the vessel. Impressed at shoulder with the maker's mark of merchant, Hugh Charles Smith, below a half-gallon capacity mark. Exceptional size. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from the Southeastern U.S. Very nice condition. A tight hairline extending across underline. A faint 1 1/4" line at base, which is visible as a longer line on interior. A very minor chip to bottom edge. Some light staining. H 7 1/4".
