Rope-Handled Redware Butter Tub with Manganese Decoration, Stamped "J. BELL", John Bell, Waynesboro, PA, circa 1840, cylindrical form with twisted clay handles and raised banding decorated throughout with sponged manganese. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Impressed with early "J. BELL" maker's mark to right of one handle. Provenance: From a Virginia estate. Excellent condition with some wear to handles, a minor rim nick, and some minor wear to edges of raised banding. H 6 5/8" ; Diameter 8 3/4".
