Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, attributed to Isaace Hewitt, Jr., Rices Landing, PA, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with an undulating vine bearing tulips and graduated swags. Freehand "4" below, flanked by X's. Straight and wavy freehand stripe decoration to shoulder, midsection, and base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse impressed "4". Provenance: From an over forty-year private collection. Areas of staining and light wear to surface. Chipping along edges of handles. Base chips.
