Exceptional Stoneware Harvest Jug with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1870, ovoid form with two applied pouring spouts, button-shaped finial, and heavily-ribbed handle, lavishly-decorated around the midsection with a freehand vine bearing graduated swags. Shoulder decorated with wavy draped brushwork and base decorated with a wide freehand stripe. Spouts and handle decorated with elaborate cobalt daubs. Large cobalt highlights to handle terminals, surrounding spouts, and covering top of finial. A rare and highly-prized form with outstanding decoration and color. Provenance: Collection of Lorren Lambert, Staunton, VA. Professional restoration to several cracks emanating from base. Professional restoration to breaks in handle. Two minor handle chips, one of which is glazed over. A tiny nick to one spout. H 12 1/2".
