Exceptional Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Meat Tenderizer, Western PA origin, circa 1875, produced from a block of clay, with waffle-patterned tenderizer on one side and highly-unusual, sawtoothed axe tip on opposite side. Edges embellished with scalloped carving. Two sides decorated with a different impressed star and diamond motif, the top and bottom each with an additional impressed star. Cobalt highlights throughout. This tenderizer is one of the finest examples of this rare and desirable Western Pennsylvania form known. Surviving in excellent condition with strong color, it is the first we have seen featuring an axe-shaped tip and impressed decoration. A few chips to axe end and very minor wear to tenderizer end. Missing wooden handle. L 4 7/8" ; W 2" ; H 3 1/2".
