Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Flower Basket Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and tapered spout, decorated with a brushed design of a crosshatched basket, brimming with leaves and flowers. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This jug is the first Harrisburg example we have seen featuring a flower container depicted in this manner. A 2 1/4" x 2 1/2" discolored in-the-firing contact mark on reverse, with some light associated crazing. Some light crazing to base and underside, probably in the firing. A 3" salt drip below decoration. Some surface wear to left side of jug.
