Scarce Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, cylindrical jar, with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a man's profile flanked by a crescent-shaped foliate motif. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Includes original salt-glazed lid. A fine example of an iconic Central Pennsylvania stoneware design. Excellent condition with two minor chips to side of rim and a small, glazed-over chip to base. Chips and wear to edge of lid.
