Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Inscribed "B.B. CRAIG HENRY / N.C.", Stamped "B.B. CRAIG / VALE, N.C.", early fourth quarter 20th century, approximately four-gallon, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared spout, and two applied open handles, the front decorated with an applied clay face with large eyebrows and ears, bulging eyes, a Roman nose with pierced nostrils, and a mouth with one row of china teeth. Combed incising to eyebrows and upper lip, forming a mustache. Surface covered in a grayish-green alkaline glaze. Reverse shoulder with rare hand-incised inscription, "B.B. CRAIG", followed by "HENRY / N.C.", Craig's hometown. Underside with impressed "B.B. CRAIG / VALE, N.C." maker's mark. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 17".
