Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Coggled Decoration and Manganese Swag Motif, Stamped "MADE BY. J. LETTS", Joshua Letts, South Amboy, NJ, early 19th century, cylindrical jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, decorated below with four lines of rope-pattern coggling, the shoulder additionally decorated with a highly-stylized manganese-slip drape motif. Impressed below with the rare South Amboy, New Jersey maker's mark, "MADE BY. J. LETTS". Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A rim chip and a few minuscule rim nicks. In-the-firing flaws, including a couple stone pings and some contact marks with a few small adhered pieces of clay. One base chip. H 8 1/2".
