Auction Highlight: July 22, 2017 Auction | New York City Stoneware | Incised Stoneware
Extremely Fine and Rare Two-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, probably Crolius Family, circa 1790, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open vertical handles, decorated on one side with an incised and cobalt-highlighted floral design featuring two graduated blossoms with open centers and incised accents to the petals. Reverse with incised and cobalt-highlighted daisy decoration, also including incised details to the petals. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This 18th century jar displays a level of refinement in its incised decoration and color rarely found on Manhattan pieces made after 1800. Its employment of two vastly-different floral motifs on opposing sides is unusual, and its strong decorative appeal rank it among the best unsigned floral-decorated jars from Manhattan that we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A 5/8" professionally-restored hole or flake at base on daisy-decorated side. A 3/4" in-the-firing surface line to foot, not visible on interior. A small rim chip. Some in-the-firing chipping to base, typical of pieces of this age and origin. H 12".
