Very Rare Sixteen-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, attributed to David Greenland Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1870, large-sized, cylindrical jar with incised banding to shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and distinctive, ribbed lug handles, profusely-decorated with freehand brushwork covering the jar's front. Decoration includes classic Morgantown vining above three rows of Morgantown-style floral motifs, all separated by freehand stripes. Base with brushed "16" flanked by additional Morgantown flowers. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Exceptional size, color, and condition. Excellent condition. Reverse with a 4" surface scratch and 4 1/2" surface line, not visible on interior. A minor chip to each handle and a minor chip to interior of rim. H 22 5/8".
