Fine and Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Freehand Cobalt Decoration and Freehand Signature, "J. Hamilton & Co.", Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, featuring the freehand cobalt signature, "J. Hamilton & Co.", between two stripes. Decorated below with a script "2" flanked on each side by three dashes and underscored by a freehand stripe. Relatively few James Hamilton stoneware pieces are known bearing a freehand signature. This example features excellent color and survives in remarkable condition. Excellent condition with some light surface wear.
