Outstanding Oversized Stoneware Butter Crock with Applied Butter Print Motifs, Stamped "T.G. BOONE & SONS / SANDS ST. / BROOKLYN", New York origin, circa 1845, approximately five-gallon, cylindrical crock with applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a molded and applied sheaf-of-wheat and star design flanked by two foliate-and-star designs, produced from wooden butter prints. Cobalt floral and foliate motifs brushed beside central sheaf-of-wheat design on front. Cobalt highlights to applied decoration, maker's mark, and handle terminals. Pieces produced at the Brooklyn, New York shop of Thomas G. Boone and his sons are considered scarce in their own right, typically found with simple brushed floral designs. This crock is the finest work produced at this pottery known. Property of a New York State collector. A minor rim chip. A 7" long in-the-firing separation on interior wall of crock and a 6" long in-the-firing separation on interior base, both of which are not visible on the exterior. An in-the-firing iron ping to top of rim and interior. H 7 7/8" ; Diameter 17 1/2".
