Very Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Tulip and Star Motifs, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'", PA origin, circa 1850-1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and extruded lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a long stem bearing three spotted tulip blossoms, applied over slip-coated clay. Unusual brushed star motifs under each handle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with John Bell maker's mark under one handle. An excellent example of this famous artisan's work in the stoneware medium. Excellent condition with minor wear to rim and one handle.
