Five-Gallon Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "J.M. HAYS", James Madison Hays, Randolph County, NC, circa 1860, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, thin angled rim molding, and applied lug handles with depressed terminals, the surface covered in a salt glaze with heavier concentration to shoulder area. Impressed at the shoulder with J.M. Hays maker's mark below a five-gallon capacity mark. Broken and reglued pieces to rim and shoulder area on front and reverse. Cracks from rim on front and reverse, including a long crack from rim on front. A 3 1/4" loss to rim. Rim chips. Large Y-shaped crack on underside. Cracks extending up from base.
